This is a fascinating image depicting life at the start of the 1900s'. Some things have not changed, vehicles still accelerate at high speed past the Monument. The sports shop at the top of Grey Street is very similar to modern day sports shops, there are tennis rackets displayed on the wall, appropriate clothes to suit sports activities are on display. The main envelopes of the buildings thankfully remain the same, except for the shop fronts.

Jan Radwanski is a photographic artist who has restored his own personal collection of images relating to Newcastle/Tyneside and Northumberland from over 100 years ago. Throughout the last few years, Jan has acquired rare images relating to Newcastle United from the earlier part of the last century during the 1895 to 1918 period as well as numerous classic images of Tyneside from before 1930. Add to this his vast collection of original glass plates taken by Alexander Lamont Henderson, Queen Victoria's Royal appointed photographer. His restoration work is phenomenal and really shows Newcastle United and Tyneside of yesteryear in a totally different light, with the majority of his work available to view for the first time. All of his updated Newcastle United and Tyneside images are exclusive to ‘The Back Page.'
