This is a great book from Brian Belton looking at the life of West Ham's first black player, John Charles. It is a touching and telling story, that also gives a complete history of the FA Youth Cup, the trophy that 'Charlo' Skippered the Hammers to in 1963 for the first time. But it is also part of the tale of how black players came into the game and the 'real' racism (not from fellow players, nor fans) in the game...the institutional discrimination that prevents talented black players from becomeing coaches, managers and certainly Football League and FA executives. |
